This is my short study break activity, so it will probably be a shorter blog post. I expect that should probably be a good thing for most of my readers.
This past week has been amazing. A little nerve-racking with all the school and physics, but outside of class and studying, amazing.
This Wednesday I went to The Globe to see " A Midsummer's Nights Dream". It literally exceeded all expectations. Our seats were in the middle, which was great. And the play was so comical, you could truly see why Shakespeare was so famous. Even though the play was written in Shakespearian style, it was rather easy to understand the plot and humor. The actors dedication was clearly seen throughout the play, which was a rather lengthy period of three hours, outside with London wind.
On Tuesday I went to Komedia, a famous comedy club in Brighton. There were two acts. The first was decent, but at some points a little too raunchy for my humor, which says a lot considering my age and the fact that I'm in my college years. But the second act was amazing. The comics clearly enjoy what they do. It was less of a practiced skit and more of a "whose line is it anyways" performance. Meaning they would make songs on the fly, bring in members of the audience and use props to create their own puns. Later we went out for some dancing, which was superb.
On Friday, I went out on a day trip for English Breakfast, a tour of the Royal Pavilion, and cream tea. I have yet to actually have the full afternoon tea which is a little unfortunate, but it was my third cream tea experience and the company was amazing. I love meeting people from the East Coast of the states as well as from other countries (Mexico, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, etc.) English Breakfast was good, but it just isn't my favorite. I claimed vegetarianism in order to avoid the Black Pudding, bacon and sausage. I'm not a big fan of the idea of eating cooked blood (Black Pudding), but I did try it and it was decent (if you could get past the blood idea). Also, I always try things one (my dads rule), and I have tried the bacon and sausage here more than once and it's just too salty and fatty for my taste. The Royal Pavilion was grand (that's putting it lightly), and full of architecture and decor for almost every taste. The outside is inspired by India, the inside is more of a Chinese feel. From the looks of this palace George the IV was a fan of ALL types of entertainment, and a huge fan of food. Only it was sad to see how he avoided his people since he was ridiculed for size. But besides that, the man had a secret entrance to the tower that would hold his current mistress (there were definitely more than one misstress in his lifetime), and a huge hidden tub that was filled with heated bath water. Not to mention the space, dinning and entertaining rooms, etc. At cream tea our table had a conversation about our interests and plans for the future, I loved it, there was more than one person who was interested in medicine and had great advice.
Sunday I went to Bath and Stonehenge. Stonehenge was more interesting to me when I was younger, and maybe I've become cynical, but it was literally just a bunch of huge rocks. The idea of knowing nothing of its purpose is interesting, but no one could spend more than an hour there unless you had a deep interest in it, or recently researched it. Bath was gorgeous. Somehow I expected it to look different but I was shocked by all that remains from the Roman Baths. PS. our tour guide kindly corrected me in my pronunciation of bath, it does not sound like the american word, but more a refined and lofty A sound. The roman bath exhibit was exceptional, and we were able to see so much of what remains, as well as taste the cleaned water. (It basically tastes like hot water, with blood, from all the iron.) But the water is supposed to have healing powers, so maybe that's why my cold got better (here's to hoping). There are still places where you can bathe in the naturally heated water that was used thousands of years ago (they are expensive spas now). Almost every building is made in the Georgian Style and is made of Bath Stone.
By the end of the day we were exhausted. It was also the hottest day we have experienced here, which I clearly was unaware of in the morning while getting dressed. I wore pants, which was a horrible idea. The one time I choose pants over shorts here and it get to about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
I will post pictures soon. I'm sure there are plenty that I'm tagged in on Facebook though. Guess the writing portion was still long...sorry...
Love and miss you all,
Nicole
